What is polyimide/polyamide PCB material?

Polyimide, also known as polyamide, is a polymer composed of imide monomers. This diverse group of polymers includes a variety of natural and synthetic materials. For example, natural polyamides include silk and wool. However, when manufacturing PCBs, the polyamide used for the board base is produced in synthetic batches.

Synthetic polyimides are produced by polymerizing various chemical substances containing imide structures. Most commonly, the process uses bismaleimide and maleic anhydride. The different chemicals and additives used in the process will produce different results, resulting in various types of polyimides with various advantages.

Pure polyimide: Pure polyimide, also known as second-generation polyimide, does not contain brominated flame retardants and other additives. Therefore, they have higher thermal stability and high temperature resistance than many of today's alternatives.

Third-generation polyimides: These polyimides contain additives that improve flame retardancy and help prevent electrical fires. Although these types of polyimides tend to have poor thermal stability, they can shorten production time due to the low temperature and time required for curing.
Filled polyimide: Filled polyimide system consists of polyimide and filler. Polyimide produces the required heat resistance and flexibility, but fillers help reduce resin shrinkage, which helps minimize the formation of cracks during curing and drilling.
Low-flow polyimides: These polyimides are composed of various resins and restrictors that reduce the flexibility of the material.
Over time, it is expected that more polyimide variants will become popular. For example, the fourth-generation polyimide is currently being developed, which will improve the adhesion and humidity sensitivity of the copper foil, as well as the overall stability.
